Former captain and national coach Sunday Oliseh said the Nigerians are now happy with the mediocre ones in the Super Eagles.
According to him, sports fans in the country are now celebrating even third place in Africa.
Oliseh noted that the Super Eagles profile has fallen, adding that the squad is now lacking in quality.
The former Juventus midfielder stressed that the current squad can only boast a handful of stars at top European clubs, unlike in his playing days.
He stated that the demands we have; the qualification you have before you can play for the Super Eagles; the bar has been reduced, ”the former Nigerian captain told Channels Television.
“As a nation, we are now content with mediocrity. We even celebrate third place in Africa. When you are Nigerian you are the best. You don’t even celebrate the second.
“That’s why when I coached the Super Eagles the first thing I said to them was, ‘If you don’t play in the Premier League anywhere in the world, forget the Super Eagles’ because the best must play here, ”the 1996 Olympic gold medalist added.
