A 45-year-old father of three, Emmanuel Eze, has committed suicide at his Umudiaka home in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the incident, stated that officers from the Nsukka Urban Police Division had been dispatched to the scene and were currently handling the situation.
Eze, who hailed from Eha-Alumona, reportedly hanged himself inside an uncompleted building on Sunday night, without leaving a suicide note. It was gathered that the deceased was a revenue collector at the local government-owned livestock at Ikpa Market in Nsukka.
The deceased, who was residing at Umudiaka in the same local government area with his family, was said to have had a domestic fracas with his immediate family on Sunday morning over a yet-to-be-identified issue and later killed himself in the night.
Neighbours who spoke on the condition of anonymity told reporters that the late Eze would have strangled his younger sister if not for the intervention of the Neighbourhood Watch Vigilante members who rushed to his house when his wife, identified as Mary, raised the alarm while he was attacking the girl.
According to the neighbours, “he strangled his younger sister to the point that blood was coming out from her ears and nostrils. He also kept a pestle by his side. However, due to the intervention of the neighbourhood watch members, who rushed to the scene, the girl was rescued. She is now hospitalised in a hospital in Nsukka metropolis.”
It was further gathered that the deceased might have committed suicide over fears that his sister could die from the injuries she sustained when he attacked her.
Elder brother to the deceased, Silas Eze, said his late brother had been behaving abnormally before he took his life.
“It is unfortunate that my younger brother decided to commit suicide. For some time now, he had been behaving like someone who had a mental health problem. Yesterday (Sunday), he hit the younger sister with a big wood and ran away. The sister was immediately rushed to the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka.
“We are surprised to discover this morning that he has hung himself in an uncompleted one-storey building near his compound. As I am talking with you, Emma’s wife is not yet aware that her husband has committed suicide, because she is the one staying with my sister in Bishop Shanahan Hospital,” he said.
