A man armed with a machete has been shot after he attacked soldiers on patrol in Brussels as he shouted “Allahu Akbar”.
Witnesses said they heard gunshots tonight as the knifeman confronted two military officers in the Belgian capital.
Belgian broadcaster RTBF reported a 30-year-old Somalian man wielding a knife and shouting “Allahu Akbar” was “shot down” after soldiers were attacked and injured.
Early reports suggested the man was killed but it was later confirmed he is alive and in a critical condition in hospital.
The soldiers received just minor injuries with one suffering facial wounds.
A spokeswoman for the Belgian prosecution service said: “With the identity that we currently have, it is a 30-year-old man who is not known for terrorist activities.”
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel tweeted: “All our support to our military. Our security services remain attentive. We are following the situation closely.”
