Woman Crush Wednesday: Olufunmilayo Obe

Olufunmilayo is the first African to be promoted to a Police  Inspector, she works with the New York Police Department, the Nigerian was formerly a Deputy Inspector. Ms. Obe is one of the highest ranked officers in the United States. She is one of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Hall of fame.

Born to Nigerian parents, the inspector began her career with the NYPD in June 1992 as a police cadet, as at February 1994, she had risen to the position of a city police officer. In December 2000,she was promoted to the level of a Sergeant, a Lieutenant in July 2005, a Captain in September 2008 and a Deputy Inspector in June 2012 and she made history on December 18,2015, replacing Deputy Inspector Kevin Williams who was given an appointment at the Counter terrorism Bureau, she has proved that black females can lead in any institution.

Funmilayo holds  a  Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the City College of New York, and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Marist College. She also went on to acquire a degree under Police Management Institute at Columbia University. Blessed with a wonderful husband, for over two decades and beautiful kids,this pace setter is a successful woman in all ramifications, the African community in the United States sees as a good role model, when she was awarded the title, a huge jubilation followed as Nigerians and Africans including their leaders, a notable one being Imam Souleymane Konate, swarm out like bees to celebrate one of their own.

A particular colleague commented on how easy going she is and praised her for being one of the kindest persons he ever came in contact with. He referred to her as a “Boss” who treated her officers fairly. A source of inspiration to many Nigerians and Africans as a whole, Funmilayo has proved that you can achieve anything you put your heart to. She is only two grades away from being the Chief of Police.

Her ascension to this position in a foreign land has shown transparency and lack of racism ,which is the birth of a new dawn. She was praised by family ,friends and well wishers to be a hard working woman and also being the true daughter of her parents for upholding their intergrity.

Some Nigerians on social media  advised the Nigerian Police Force to see Funmilayo as an example to set good standards and avoid bribery and corruption in all forms.

They went on to condemn the slothful and ignorant nature of the policemen, and pleaded with them to become hardworking so they too,can be rewarded for a honest cause. Congratulations to Funmi for making Nigerians and Africans proud and recognized globally.
