Fire Burns 17 people in Gombe State

 

The Director of Fire Service in Gombe State, Mr. Solomon Lakwande, says fire claimed 17 lives and property worth N68.01m between January 2016 and November 2016.

Lakwande on Monday said that the service received 237 emergency calls, saved 1,042 lives and property worth N1.819bn as well as rescued 130 persons .

According to him, electrical fault and human negligence were causes of the fire disasters in the period under review.

He called on the public to always switch off their electrical appliances before closing for the day and to always guide their children in the way they handle such appliances.

Lakwande also advised women to put off burning firewood after use, especially during harmattan, saying negligence could cause disaster.

He further advised users of power generating sets to always put them off before fueling or refueling them as they could either easily go up in flames or explode.

The fire service boss also expressed displeasure at people in the habit of getting in the way of rescue operators during emergency situations.

Lakwande appealed to the public to demonstrate understanding of the nature of their operations and to assist firemen with information that will ease their work during emergency situations.

The director identified dearth of manpower and fire-fighters as some of the challenges the service is facing.He, therefore, called on the government to employ more personnel for improved performance of the service.
