A Nigerian asylum seeker was beaten to death in a racist attack by a right-wing football fan in a central Italian town, officials said on Wednesday.

Emmanuel Chidi Nnamdi, 36, was walking with his wife, Chinyere, in the Marche town of Fermo on Tuesday, when they had racial abuse heaped on them by the supporter of a local football club, according to Italian media reports.

The football hooligan, known as an ‘ultra’ in Italy, allegedly called Chinyere, 24, a “monkey”.

That led to an altercation and Chidi was brutally beaten on the head, reportedly with a road-sign pole, until he fell to the ground.

The attack caused a brain hemorrhage that resulted in an irreversible coma. The attacker, named Amedeo Mancini, was arrested on charges of murder on Thursday morning.

“As mayor of a town that is welcoming and open to integration, I feel I’m living in a nightmare,” the town’s mayor said.

The couple arrived in Italy last year after escaping an attack by the Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, at a church in Nigeria in which they each lost their parents and a daughter.

Chinyere also lost her baby after the perilous Mediterranean crossing.

Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi took to twitter on Wednesday to condemn the gruesome racist attack.

“A few asylum seekers were hosted at the local Catholic mission, and apparently that town and that area is not new to episodes of intolerance and racism.

“The guy who is allegedly responsible is notorious in town for his racist views. According to the local priest who hosts the refugees, he calls every African a monkey. It is shameful that this has happened in my country.” a source said.
