The mother of late Hip Hop legend Tupac Shaku, Afeni Shakur died on Monday 2nd May, in Northern California. She was aged 69.
Marin County deputies responded to Shakur’s home in Sausalito, California, Monday night after she suffered a possible cardiac arrest, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday morning. She was taken to a local hospital and died just before 10:30 p.m, according to reports.
Born Alice Faye Williams in 1947, she was a member of the Black Panthers and served 11 months in prison, during which time she was pregnant with Tupac. She served as her own defence attorney and was acquitted of multiple counts. She was released from prison shortly before her son’s birth in June 1971.
The popular song “Dear Mama” by Tupac, was a dedication and appreciation to his mother for her life struggles.
Watch: Dear Mama by Tupac:
Afeni founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, after her son’s tragic shooting death a year later. The foundation promotes youth arts programs, and oversaw his unreleased material.
