South African paralympian Oscar Pistorius, has had his conviction of manslaughter for shooting girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to death in February 2013 changed to murder.
The South African Supreme court of appeals overturned the original conviction of the lower court, Justice Lorimer Eric Leach delivered the ruling of the five-judge appeals court in Bloemfontein and directed the trial court, the North Gauteng High Court, to impose sentence.
Pistorius killed his girlfriend Reeva at his home, after shooting her four times through a locked bathroom door.
He was found guilty of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, of his 29-year-old girlfriend at an earlier trial in October last year.
The 28-year-old served just 12 months of a five-year sentence for the killing and he is currently on house arrest.
Oscar Pistorius will now have to return back to the court for his murder sentence. The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years in prison
Judge Eric Leach said to the courtroom, “the accused ought to have been found guilty of murder”.
