Germany is expected to take in between 650,000 and 750,000 refugees in 2015, mainly from Syria, Serbia, Eritrea and Afghanistan. This is twice the earlier projections of 300,000, the German Handelsblatt newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The government in Germany and other EU member have been struggling with huge numbers of undocumented immigrants trying to enter Europe, fleeing conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa.

Up to 80,000 people are expected to seek asylum in Sweden this year, but Germany has become the most popular destination. Germany received an all-time record monthly number of 79,000 asylum applications in the month of July alone.
