American police have launched a manhunt after a white gunman killed at least nine people at one of the country’s oldest black-majority churches.
The man attacked Emmanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, at approximately 9pm local time last night.
One of the people killed is reported to be the church’s senior pastor, Clementa Pinckney.
It’s currently unclear whether there are any more fatalities or injuries.
Authorities have said they’re searching for a man in his 20s.
Police chief Gregory Mullen said: “It is unfathomable that somebody in today’s society would walk into a church when people are having a prayer meeting and take their lives.”
